Gender Issues Highlighted in the Film:

❤Exploitation of Women: 

                 The film portrays how women, especially young girls, are tricked, trafficked, and forced into sex work.

    Ex: Ganga's boyfriend, Ramnik, tricks her into running away with him to Mumbai, saying he will help her become a movie star. Instead, he sells her to a brothel in Kamathipura. This betrayal leads to her being mistreated and taken advantage of.

❤Lack of Autonomy: 

           It highlights the absence of choice and freedom in the lives of sex workers.

   Ex: Once in the brothel, Gangu is forced into sex work against her will. She has no say in her life choices, showcasing how women in such situations are stripped of their autonomy and treated as property.

❤Stigma and Discrimination: 

       Society’s double standards and harsh judgment toward sex workers are explored deeply.

     Ex:When Gangu tries to register children from

Kamathipura in a nearby school, the officials and other parents oppose her just because she is a sex worker. This shows how society rejects and looks down on women in the sex trade.

❤Empowerment and Resistance: 

      Despite the odds, Gangubai fights for the rights of women in her community, demanding dignity, education, and healthcare.

    Ex: Even though Gangu faces many difficulties, she becomes a strong leader. She talks at a public rally and meets with Prime Minister Nehru to ask for better rights and respect for sex workers. Her actions show that she stands up against unfair treatment and fights for respect.

      The film shows how Gangubai challenges male dominance and becomes a powerful figure in a male-controlled world.

    Ex: Gangu deals with threats from a man named Raziabai, who wants to control the red-light area. She bravely fights back and teams up with a gangster named Rahim Lala, gaining respect and power in a man's world.
